Lexis Nexis: AI for Financial Crime: Opportuity or Threat?
Speakers: Dr. Flavio Villanustre - Senior VP of technology and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for LexisNexis® Risk Solutions, also Tracy Manning -- Director of Financial Crime Compliance - United States and Canada
Overview: ChatGPT and other Large Language Models are quickly becoming a standard tool in many fields - and justifiably so, since they deliver on a significant number of promises. But like any other technology, when used improperly or unethically, these same AI models can be harmful - and even enable entirely new criminal enterprises. On the one hand, anti-financial crime professionals can leverage these models to sift through vast amounts of natural language data to develop algorithms to drive cost-saving automation. But on the other hand, bad actors can use the same models to improve their ability to perform identity theft, evade AML compliance checks, bypass security controls, and compromise the privacy of victims. To make things more complex, there have been calls for legislation to put a pause to AI and Large Language Model development to enable research into ethical aspects to “catch up”. But rather than mitigating ethical risks, this move may enable unethical bad actors to continue to advance their AI during this pause, leapfrogging lawful and compliant organizations who may stop innovating as they abide by the law. During this presentation, we will introduce the audience to the current state of the art in Large Language Models and explore their potential to be both an opportunity and a threat to financial crime prevention and compliance professionals.
