Bray
John Bray is a risk consultant and policy specialist with more than 35 years’ experience in Asia, Europe and Africa. His particular areas of expertise include: anti-corruption strategies for the private sector; business and human rights; and private sector policy issues in conflict-affected areas. His association with Myanmar dates back to the 1990s when, in addition to client assignments, he prepared a series of analytical studies on the country for the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) in London. He is currently based in Singapore.
Representative examples of his consulting experience include:
- assisting international companies with their crisis management strategies in response to the February 2021 military coup in Myanmar;
- advising an international company on the human rights implications of its corporate engagement programme in Myanmar;
- conducting a ‘mid-term review’ for a Yangon-based NGO specialising in corporate responsibility;
- a detailed anti-corruption review for an international company operating in India, with a focus on the practical operational challenges of dealing with officials at the local and state levels;
- serving as the lead consultant for a UK Department for International Development (DfID) project to provide guidance on corruption and human rights for international companies in Pakistan, Mexico, and Kenya.
His other public sector assignments include special projects for the World Bank, the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). He has also worked on projects with a number of NGOs including International Alert and Transparency International.
John taught for three years in Kenya and India before joining Control Risks as a country analyst. He led Control Risks’ political risk team in London. He then spent 12 years based in Japan before moving to Singapore.
John has an MA in History from the University of Cambridge. He speaks plausible German, passable French, conversational Hindi, and survival Japanese.
