In Focus: Effectiveness Roundtable — Incentivizing a Risk-Based Approach

Craig Timm is the Senior Director of AML at ACAMS.

Prior to joining ACAMS, Craig had more than 15 years of anti-financial crime experience across the public and private sectors. At the Department of Justice, Craig served as a Deputy Chief in the Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section (now Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section) at headquarters in Washington, DC. In that role, he led a team of prosecutors responsible for enforcing criminal violations of the Bank Secrecy Act, U.S. economic sanctions, and money laundering laws committed by financial institutions and their employees. He led the prosecution of some of the largest financial institutions in the world including HSBC and BNP Paribas. Craig began his career with the Department of Justice as an Assistant United States Attorney in Arizona. At the Department of Justice, he was the recipient of numerous awards including the Attorney General’s Crime Victim’s Restoration Award, the Assistant Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Service, and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director’s Meritorious Service Award.

At Bank of America, Craig was a Financial Crimes Executive responsible for Strategic Initiatives. These initiatives included participation in the Bank Secrecy Act Advisory Group, 314(b) information sharing initiatives, and the Wolfsberg Group as well as managing the day-to-day liaison with FinCEN, the U.S. Treasury, senior financial crimes policy officials at the OCC and Federal Reserve, key law enforcement agencies, and the U.S. Department of Justice. He also spent several years as the Financial Crimes Executive for the Global Wealth and Investment Management business lines where he served as the designated Anti-Money Laundering Compliance Officer for Merrill Lynch and U.S. Trust.

Craig has an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and a law degree from the Northwestern University School of Law.

Ms. Clew is an independent director of the North America Board of Rabobank and of UtrechtAmericas Holdings, Inc.  She chairs the Board Risk Committee and serves on the Board Audit Committee. She is an independent director of the board of Sigma360 and is also an advisory board member at Duality Technologies. She continues to be active in the public policy arena, including contributing to advocacy led by the Global Coalition to Fight Financial Crime and to other efforts to improve effectiveness. Ms. Clew has also contributed to research by the Royal United Services Institute’s Centre for Finance and Security.

Ms. Clew was the Global Head of Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Compliance at Citigroup. She was previously Deloitte’s Global and US Leader of the AML and Sanctions Consulting Practice, as well as a Senior Vice President at Fidelity Investments and a partner at Andersen Consulting.

J. Edward 'Ned' Conway is the Executive Secretary of the Wolfsberg Group, an association of 12 global banks that develops frameworks and guidance for the management of financial crime risks. Prior to his appointment at Wolfsberg, Ned was the Group Head of Financial Crime Compliance Framework and Policies at Banco Santander. He chairs the UN’s Private Sector Dialogue on the disruption of financial crimes related to environmental crime, which he has done since its inauguration in 2021, and he collaborates regularly with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, training financial intelligence units, central banks and supervisory authorities in the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.  Mr. Conway is the author of  Counterterrorism and Threat Finance Analysis During Wartime (2015) and A Less Vivid Future (2017), with publications in Foreign Affairs, the Wall Street Journal, and peer reviewed journals such as Energy Policy. Prior to working in the private sector, he was a threat finance analyst for the US Department of Defense. He has a PhD in International Relations from the University of St Andrews (Scotland) and a degree in Psychology from Davidson College (North Carolina, USA).
