Online Financial Crime: Exploitation of Older Customers

Caryn is the Regional Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Director – APAC for ACAMS, where she is the lead English speaking SME practitioner on AML and Financial Crime Compliance across the APAC region. Working closely with APAC and international colleagues, Caryn plays a key role in shaping ACAMS priorities, offerings, and activities across the APAC region.

Caryn brings to ACAMS a diverse global banking experience in large financial institutions such as Standard Chartered, Clearstream Banking, JP Morgan and UBS AG, to name a few.  She has worked in global, regional and country teams and have led global implementation of processes across teams in multiple jurisdictions. Before joining ACAMS, Caryn was the Head of Financial Crime Compliance Controls, Surveillance Excellence with Standard Chartered Bank, where she was responsible for the end-to-end process, governance, and risk management of the group wide alert disposition process. Caryn’s expertise covers Client Due Diligence, financial crime compliance business advisory, project management, governance, risk management, and the overarching financial crime compliance framework.

Dr. Annabelle Chow is the principal clinical psychologist at Annabelle Psychology. She is registered with the Singapore Register of Psychologists (SRP) and accredited by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

She has clinical experience in both acute and community settings in Singapore and Australia. Her interest covers those of personality disorders, trauma, and abuse, as well as geriatric issues including dementia, adjustment disorders, grief, and loss. In her work, she regularly works with patients at risk of suicide and self-harm, employing various techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Schema Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to manage these behaviours.

She strongly believes that the needs of everyone are unique and different, reflecting this philosophy in the careful selection of therapy and her relational approach tailored to each individual needs.

Dr. Annabelle provides therapy in English, Mandarin, Teochew, and Hokkien.

Grace currently oversees the Financial Crime Compliance Program implementation for the Singapore and ASEAN Cluster of Standard Chartered, covering AML, Sanctions, ABC and Fraud risk, across the Consumer, Private and Business Banking as well as Corporate, Commercial and Institutional Banking (CCIB) business segments.

Prior to Standard Chartered, Grace was the Southeast Asia Country MLRO at JP Morgan Chase covering CCIB, Asset & Wealth Management and Trust. With close to 20 years of experience in Operations, Middle Office and Compliance at global financial institutions, Grace has held regional FCC leadership roles including Head of AML Monitoring and Investigations; Head of AML Advisory and APAC MLRO.

She is a current bank representative with Singapore AML/CFT Industry Partnership (ACIP), and a member of the 2015 MAS-ABS AML regulation revision and 2018 ACIP - Trade Based Money Laundering working groups. She was also part of the Asia Development Bank Trade Finance AML workgroup (SAR Feedback loop).

Frances Yong is the founder of White Byte, an organisation that promotes digital inclusion for the elderly, and cyber integrity in the community. She is the developer of PROTEC (Programme for Technology and Cyber Safety), a two-prong community programme that raises awareness of cybercrime among the elderly and youths i.e. PROTEC creates an engaging learning experience by pairing youth volunteers with elderly participants to support the latter in learning how to use and protect their devices. Besides the elderly, Frances is also involved in raising cybercrime and online harm awareness among other vulnerable groups e.g. medical patients, at-risk youths. She is recognised as a Master Trainer in Digital Literacy by the ASEAN Foundation, as part of a wider global initiative supported by Google.org. Prior to founding White Byte, Frances was a group-risk professional in the financial industry in the disciplines of fraud, cyber and operational risks. Among the roles she held were the Global Lead for Cybercrime Culture and External Awareness, and the Head of Fraud Learning and Awareness. Frances started her career in advertising and marketing. Some of her notable achievements at that time include leading her clients to be inducted into the Guinness Book of Records, winning a few marketing and creative awards as well as being a judge in regional and international creative awards.
